The 5 Ws
WHY: To raise awareness how much the humankind is surrounded by EMF radiation.
WHAT: It is an EMF detector that senses mobile phone radiation and can also sense objects that have lower Hertz levels as well I.E. Microwave, Lamp, Hair dryer and many more. (To show proof)
WHERE: Everywhere and anywhere. Simply take it out or indoors and see the world through a different perspective.
WHEN:Anytime. See the difference between an object that is on and off or whilst using the object or not and see the difference within the number of bars.
HOW: Connect the battery and simply see the bars increase or decrease.

An LED EMF detector!
I now enjoyed working with the Arduino, therefore, I wanted to make another type of EMF detector and try out different types of detectors that do the same job. The one I previously made indicated the level of EMF through levels of bars in the bar graph. However, this time I wanted to make an EMF detector that indicated the level of EMF through an single LED light. So;
Bright = High level of EMF radiation level (Run away A.S.A.P and save your life)
Dull = low level of EMF radiation level
IT WORKS!!!!!!
However, the LED light is fuzzy. It doesn't really show a clear understanding of how much radiation there is. Therefore, I prefer to stick with the Bar-graph EMF detector as it shows the level of radiation through clear measurements.

The more I experimented and worked on the Arduino and the programming, the more I began to understand the whole concept and it made more sense.

My survey about radiation.. (I asked people I saw on the streets who were mainly using their phones)
My question;
"Are you aware of the amount of radiation your mobile phone gives out?"
1. The first person I interviewed doesn't care about the radiation but maybe seeing the amount would make her realise how much radiation is actually around her.
2. The second says she is aware of the amount of radiation but needs her phone because she uses for her business but the detector I made would make her realise even more about radiation and therefore she would try and solve this situation by using headphones whilst talking or preferring text rather than calling.
3. The last said she don't believe what to believe about radiation. So my EMF detector would be a proof for her to see the amount of radiation through her own eyes. How harmful it is and maybe she would use her phone lesser.
The reason why I interviewed people is because I began to question my product. So I wanted to see what kind of people would use my product and when? where? How useful would it be? The EMF radiation detector I made would be useful for these people?

Using something different to explore + experiment = learn :D
I was playing around with the Arduino circuit I made that had the bar
graph attached. I uploaded the code to work with my bar graph and this
time, used the 'Slider'as a means to experiment with the levels of
light. When I slide the slider down, the level of light decreases and when I do the opposite it increases.
PHEW!!
ATLAST I managed to make the bar graph light up! The problem was with the wires that was connected to the wrong place in the Arduino and also the coding done for it was wrong so it had to be re-done. After hitting the 'Upload' button the level of bars in the LED bar graph was 0 but as I whent closer to the computers, plugs, light bulb, kettle and microwave it lit and boosted up to 10 bars!!!! AMAZING eh? But the problem is that the EMF detector I made, doesn't really sense the amount of radiation coming out from mobile phones unless if the wire touches the cell phone.
I am still working on this to improve the sensitivity...
I am still working on this to improve the sensitivity...
Its not working :(
I have managed to sort out the coding. Even though, there aren't no problems in the coding, my Arduino kit doesn't work: the LED bar graph light is supposed to light up whenever near a device that generates EMF (Electromagnetic Filed Radiation) but doesn't. I have tried many things to overcome this situation like; tried different LED lights, tried different resistors, thicker wire.. but its simply not happening. I dont know whether I have done something wrong with circuit it self or if its the arduino application code :S

Where am I so far?
I am working on to making the EMF radiation detector but I am finding it difficult to make the LED bar graph to work :S
However, I have managed to find a link that actually shows me how to light it up so I am still working on it.
But I managed to make the programming work on the Arduino app >
const int ledPin = 1; // the number of the LED pin
int ledState = LOW; // ledState used to set the LED
long previousMillis = 0; // will store last time LED was updated
long interval = 1000; // interval at which to blink (milliseconds)
void setup() {
pinMode(ledPin, OUTPUT);
}
void loop()
{
unsigned long currentMillis = millis();
if(currentMillis - previousMillis > interval) {
previousMillis = currentMillis;
if (ledState == LOW)
ledState = HIGH;
else
ledState = LOW;
digitalWrite(ledPin, ledState);
}
}

Dear Mobile phone, I cannot live without you as you have been the cause for me to exist. Yours sincerely, Brain tumor.
There are endless facts about the dangers caused by mobile phone radiations.
Interesting facts about mobile phones;
Did you know?
- That up to 60% of the radiation emitted by a typical cell phone (enough to cause heating), will be absorbed by the user's head?
- The first text message was sent in 1992
- There are approximately 3.4 billion mobile phones in use
- More than 1,000 cell phones are activated each minute
- Am iphone now has more processing power than the North American Air defence Command did in 1965
- Percentage of mobile text messages in Japan are unsolicited: 80%
- Text messages contribute to 20% of operator revenues.
- On New Years Day 2004, the highest recorded daily total was reached with 111 million text messages sent

Amazingly beautiful :)
I would definitely buy such a thing! Near my bed side which would make me feel somewhere beyond what I usually see... hmmm
I have realised how much this small Arduino thing can do!
Maybe I could try and do something like this, but only lights up whilst near mobile phones?? It would be tricky to make but I am still researching....

WOW!
This is a different type type of Electromagnetic field detector also using the Arduino.
Another video I found on youtube was very interesting as well because this time it was all about using an Arduino microcontroller to sense invisible electromagnetic fields using wire, a resistor, and an LED > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1Bke3750WE
Learning to change, changing to learn...
There are different types of electromagnetic radiation sensor machines. This one above shows the level of radiation through lights; the bright red light indicates the high radiation it senses buut the green indicates the low level of radiation.
This is a mobile phone radiation sensor that proves the amount of radiations around us through sound and digital numbers. The investigator tried to measure how far the measuring device pick up radiation from usual mobile phones. It is interesting how the distance was over 5 meters and the frequency number increased as the sensor got nearer the phone.
(These two sensors however, dont use Arduino)
What has the world come to :S
It is interesting learning about how harmful electromagnetic radiation is for our health. We forget how much we use our phones but it is obvious that many cell phone users spend 30 minutes a day on their mobile. That's 11000 minutes a year of cell phone radiation applied to the side of their head. Year after year after year.
Don't sleep with your smart phone nearby!
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/10/30/opinion/greene-smart-phone-addiction/index.html
Looking at this article about the reasons why we shouldnt sleep with our mobile phones so close to us, the article writer himself locks the phone whilst going to sleep. He wont even let his cellphone charge overnight in the bedroom because "If its there, I would have the temptation to turn it on and check it". As can be seen we have become so addictive to our mobile phones, its is an automatic reflex to use it eventhough it might not be needed. But maybe the term 'obsession' better fits than 'addiction'?
Like him, we should consider locking all of those devices in another room at night. He promises that it makes a difference: "You sleep better."

The younger generation are 'addicted' to mobile phones!!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/8458786/The-young-generation-are-addicted-to-mobile-phones.html
'Young people are now addicted to their mobile phones it feels like they have lostv a limb when they are without them, a study finds'.
Ok we understand that technology has made successful changes over the years: be it new industrial, new technology and new wealth but hasnt it come to the point where we should stop and think? Where is this leading us to? What is the world going to look like in 20 years time? (thats if it still is in place) Alright, we get the point that technology responds to needs as a means to simplifying and improving our everyday lives but I believe that we should take a break, wake up and realise that technology is affecting us deeply in many ways.
I began to question why people become so addicted to their mobile phones. After talking to many friends and family, this is the result;

I began to question why people become so addicted to their mobile phones. After talking to many friends and family, this is the result;
- People feel uncomfortable without their cellphones
- Cellphones become a need, not a want
- An insatiable need to talk
- Stress caused by cell phone bills
- Interpersonal problems
- High levels of insecurity
- Health risks due to exposure to electrical-magnetic waves or use of cellphones while driving
- People who are severally addicted may experience hallucinations, i.e. thinking that their cell phones are ringing when they are not
5 cell phone radiation protection tips
- Buy a low radiation phone
- Choose texting over talking.
- Use a head set or speaker.
- Use only when there is a strong signal.
- Limit your child's phone use
THIS IS A COMMAND! Keep children away from mobile phones!
Just say no to letting your child talk on a cell phone! A
Swedish study has confirmed that there is the highest risk of brain
tumors among people who began using cell phones in adolescence.

Gathering information about mobile phone radiations!
Mobile phones use electromagnetic radiation, in the microwave range. So what are the causes?
Some of the potential side effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation:
- Blurry Vision
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Neck Pain
- Memory Loss
- Leukemia
- Rare Brain Cancers
- Enzyme Changes That Affect DNA
- Birth Defects
- Changes In Metabolism
- Increased Risk For Alzheimer’s Disease
- Increased Risk For Heart Conditions
- Neurological Hormone Changes Linked Impaired Brain Function
- And More…
Those moments when you stop, listen, look around and simply burst out 'OMG!'
So much to be learnt...
Whilst I was researching, I came across a book called 'Exposed' which is focuses on the truths about mobile phone radiation, and what the industry has done to hide this. I am reading through this book and I have come to understand how mobile phones are creating a path to danger in future considerations. It also quotes how mobile phones give out radiation whilst in your jacket pocket as well. There is a shocking estimation of 4.3 billion users worldwide.
So how can I raise awareness? (before its too late)

| Cell-phone use continues to rise, which is why scientists and lawmakers are so concerned about the potential risks associated with the devices. |
My final design idea...
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbr8zn_full-signal-documentary-trailer_people
I have come to a conclusion of changing my previous idea after watching this documentary about mobile phone signals and how harmful they are to us, both mentally and physically. The usage of mobile phones are increasing and this is causing an environmental issue. Therefore, I am planning to design and make a detector that senses the amount of mobile phone radiation. My aim is to make people realise how much radiation there is around us, also showing how the level of the mobile phone radiation increases whilst using it i.e. calling or text messaging.
This is an example of how mobile phone radiation effects us:

BEWARE! All your lies willl now be revealed.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16906546
Whilst I was generally researching, I came across a link called 'Eye tracker' which is a device for measuring eye positions and eye movements, this was a process mainly used in psychological concepts. I found this very interesting and thought of taking something between the borders of psychology. One of the main problems we face in life is trusting because everyone seems to lie. I am interested in designing and making a lie detector machine to be particularly used as a game between friends; as a means to improve the bond between friends and this could result in trusting one another?
However, I am still not certain of this design idea. Working. Development still in progress.
CODES + GRAPHS + SENSORS= CONNECTION?
How are we affected by our environment?
Looking at the world we live in, people are responsible to collect their own data. We are injected with robotic hormones and thus sense the sensitivity running through the air. WE ARE SENSORS- WE SENSE AND RESPOND BACK!!!!
Where is technology taking us? is it kicking us all in a steep hole that is hard to come out from or up ontop of everything?
While technology has done many things to advance our lives, and make it easier to live, access vast stores of information and entertain ourselves, I sometimes feel that we have lost some of the pleasures of life that technology can’t easily replace.
Have you noticed an adverse effect on society due to technology? Have you and your family been able to avoid the less than helpful side effects of living in this modern world? What do you think society will be like in twenty or fifty years?

More information... information... information...
Looking more in depth into Arduino, we have now learnt about resistors, circuits, volt, different type of sensors, breadboard and light dependant resistor (there are different resistors that work for different purposes i.e. one that senses heartbeat and many more). It is also important to know details about the wires because a different colour wire is used for different purposes;
I have now become more familiar with Arduino even though at the beginning I was struggling and conscious about it.
- RED = Voltage i.e. A1
- YELLOW = the Control
- BLACK = connects to Ground
I have now become more familiar with Arduino even though at the beginning I was struggling and conscious about it.
Our first lesson about Arduino...
In our first lesson with Pete, Juliet and John was an introduction to electronics mainly concentrating into Arduino which is a circuit that could attach components to. I believe that Arduino is a very unique design idea as it is designed to work on any kind of system designed to make the process of using electronics in multidisciplinary projects more accessible. Arduino understands a language called 'SERIAL' which is a language that we talk through using Arduino and the computer/s. We have to bare in mind sometimes Arduino doesn't understand particular words, the misunderstood words automatically turn black but if words turn orange it is perfectly understood- the colour coding makes it easy to know where the problem is. So how do we start up a conversation from the Arduino to the computer?
- setup() – a function run once at the start of a program that can initialise settings
- loop() – a function called repeatedly until the board powers off
